Objective: The student will be able to:
Apply the first and second derivative test to determine local extreme values
Apply the first and second derivative tests to problem solve
Agenda: I. Steps to follow for solving optimization problems
a. Read the problem carefully and identify the critical information.
b. Develop the model . Draw and label the critical information.
Introduce a variable to represent the quantity to be optimized
Write a function whose extreme value is the solution
c. Graph the function and find the domain. Determine what values make sense to the problem.
d. Find the derivative and the critical points.
e. Solve the model
f. Interpret your solution (Communicate!!)
